Behavioral Medicine
If a person suffers from a chronic painful condition, it is almost inevitable that he or she will exhibit symptoms of depression. Many people in pain are also frustrated by their inability to do what they used to do - and complain of anxiety, poor family interaction, poor sleep, and other indicators of psychosocial distress.
Fortunately for patients of PCET, a local group of clinical psychologists works in harmony with us to provide ongoing diagnostic and behavioral therapy services.
Ted Jones, PhD. offers psychological services in coordination with your patients' pain management. He offers pain coping techniques, relaxation training, biofeedback, and cognitive therapy, all to help each patient deal best with his or her pain. This ensures that patients have behavioral and cognitive coping skills to help with their pain to supplement whatever injections and medications PCET has to offer. Dr. Jones is additionally an integral part of our ability to assess the appropriateness of opiate management and risk for aberrant behaviors for your patients. We are the only local pain management practice with a psychologist who specializes in addiction management on site five days per week.
"Behavioral medicine" is a name for psychology and psychotherapy services offered to people with health issues such as chronic pain. People are not referred for behavioral medicine because their physician thinks they are "crazy" or that their pain is "not real pain" or "all in their head." Behavioral medicine helps people deal with their chronic pain. We offer practical ways to help people reduce their pain, how to cope with their pain, and how not to let the pain overwhelm them. We also help the physicians and practitioners at Pain Consultants of East Tennessee to assess and understand their patients so they can help them better.
Here are some of the services offered at Pain Consultants:
-individual and family sessions
-assessment and evaluation services
-biofeedback and relaxation training
-consultation on possible medication abuse and treatment plan adherence
