Behavioral Medicine Institute
Living with chronic pain can affect your sleep, mood, relationships, and ability to participate in everyday activities. Behavioral medicine helps you understand these challenges and develop practical ways to manage the impact of pain.
At Pain Consultants of East Tennessee, behavioral medicine services are provided by Behavioral Medicine Institute, P.C., an independent practice that offers on-site consultation as part of coordinated pain care.
How Behavioral Medicine Can Help
Your pain is real. A recommendation for behavioral medicine does not mean your provider doubts your symptoms. It recognizes that persistent pain can affect many parts of your life, and that support for coping, stress, and daily functioning can be helpful alongside medical treatment.
Depending on your needs and available services, behavioral medicine may help you:
- Develop practical pain coping and self-management skills.
- Recognize how stress, emotions, and pain can influence one another.
- Practice relaxation strategies.
- Address challenges involving sleep, mood, or adjustment to chronic pain.
- Set realistic goals for participating more fully in daily life.
Psychological Evaluations
Your medical provider may recommend a psychological evaluation as part of treatment planning. This may include an assessment related to medication management or preparation for certain interventional procedures.
An evaluation helps the care team better understand your needs, identify factors that may affect treatment, and make recommendations for support or monitoring. Your provider will explain why an evaluation is recommended and how it fits into your care.
Part of Your Individualized Care Plan
Behavioral medicine works alongside other approaches to pain management. Depending on your evaluation, your plan may also include medication management, physical or occupational therapy, injections, or interventional procedures.
Not every patient needs every service. Recommendations are based on your individual needs, treatment goals, and the availability of appropriate care.
