Minuteman® G5 Interspinous-Interlaminar Fusion/Decompression
Minuteman® is a minimally invasive spinal stabilization device implanted between the spinous processes to help restore alignment, maintain spacing, and reduce pressure on affected nerves. Performed through a small lateral incision using image guidance, the procedure is designed to provide structural support and decrease pain associated with lumbar instability or nerve compression. For many patients, Minuteman® can improve mobility, reduce discomfort, and help restore daily function without the need for traditional open surgery.
Quick Facts
- Setting: Outpatient, image-guided
- Time: ~45–75 minutes
- Anesthesia: Local with sedation
- Incision: Small lateral approach
- Recovery: Same day; activity restrictions for several weeks
Who It Helps
- Pain from lumbar instability or spondylolisthesis (selected grades)
- Neurogenic claudication from foraminal compromise
- Patients who have not improved with conservative care
How It Works
Through a small incision, your provider positions the Minuteman® implant between spinous processes to stabilize the segment and maintain space for nerves. Bone graft may be added to promote fusion.
What To Expect
- Before: Imaging confirms candidacy; medication review
- During: Small incision, fluoroscopic guidance, device placement
- After: Soreness common; avoid bending/twisting/lifting as instructed; follow-up imaging as needed
Benefits & Risks
- Benefits: Small incision, less tissue disruption than open surgery, stabilization with potential decompression
- Risks: Infection, bleeding, implant-related issues, non-union, nerve irritation; not appropriate for all anatomies
Is It Right For Me? (Checklist)
- ✅ Diagnosed segmental instability or stenosis correlating with symptoms
- ✅ Failed conservative therapies
- ✅ Able to follow post-procedure restrictions
Alternatives At PCET
- MILD®
- Epidural steroid injections
- Radiofrequency ablation (facet-mediated pain)

FAQs
- Is Minuteman® the same as a spacer? It’s a stabilization device designed for interspinous-interlaminar placement; your provider will explain how it differs from other implants.
- Will I set off metal detectors? Unlikely to be an issue; you’ll receive device information.
- How long is recovery? Restrictions typically 4–6 weeks; your plan is individualized.
- Insurance? Many plans cover when criteria are met; we’ll check benefits.
What Happens Next?
After the Minuteman® procedure, your provider will review how your pain responds and whether you notice improvement in standing, walking, movement, or daily activities.
If you experience meaningful relief, your provider may discuss follow-up care, activity guidance, physical therapy, or functional rehabilitation to help support your progress.
If you do not get the relief you were hoping for, that does not mean you are out of options. Your provider may reassess whether your symptoms are coming from another source or whether a different treatment path may be more appropriate.
Possible next steps may include:
- Reviewing your symptoms and imaging again
- Evaluating other possible pain sources
- Additional diagnostic testing when appropriate
- A different procedure or treatment option
- Physical therapy or functional rehabilitation
- Other treatment options available through PCET
The goal is to better understand your pain, support your mobility, and determine the next best step for your care.
