Spondylosis

Spondylosis is a term used to describe age-related wear and tear affecting the spine’s discs, joints, and bones. Often referred to as spinal arthritis or degenerative spine disease, it can cause pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility in the neck, mid-back, or lower back. At Pain Consultants of East Tennessee, we provide diagnostic evaluations and advanced, minimally invasive treatments to help manage spondylosis symptoms and improve spinal function.

Quick facts

  • Region affected: Cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine
  • Common symptoms: Neck or back pain, stiffness, limited range of motion, or nerve irritation
  • Causes: Natural aging, repetitive strain, genetics, or prior injury
  • Treatment goal: Reduce pain, improve flexibility, and prevent further degeneration

Who it affects

  • Adults over age 40 experiencing chronic back or neck pain
  • Individuals with physically demanding jobs or repetitive motion strain
  • Patients with a history of spinal injury or arthritis
  • People experiencing radiating pain, tingling, or numbness in the arms or legs

How it develops

Over time, the spinal discs lose hydration and elasticity, while the surrounding bones and joints adapt by forming bone spurs (osteophytes). These changes can narrow the spinal canal or foramina, leading to pressure on spinal nerves. The resulting inflammation and nerve irritation can cause localized or radiating pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility.

What to expect from treatment

Your provider will perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine the extent of degenerative changes and nerve involvement. Treatment typically includes a combination of interventional procedures, physical therapy, and medication management. Common approaches include:

  • Epidural Steroid Injections: Reduce inflammation around compressed nerves.
  • Facet Joint Injections: Relieve pain from arthritic or inflamed facet joints.
  • Medial Branch Blocks and Radiofrequency Neurotomy: Target pain-conducting nerves for long-term relief.
  • Physical Therapy: Improves posture, flexibility, and spinal strength.
  • Spinal Cord Stimulation: Provides pain control for advanced degenerative cases.

Benefits & goals

  • Relieve chronic neck or back pain
  • Reduce inflammation and nerve irritation

  • Enhance overall quality of life

Risks of untreated spondylosis

  • Progressive degeneration and stiffness
  • Chronic nerve compression and pain
  • Decreased mobility and physical endurance
  • Potential for spinal instability

Is it right for me? (Checklist)

FAQs

  • Is spondylosis the same as arthritis of the spine? Yes—spondylosis describes arthritic changes in the vertebrae and facet joints.
  • Can it be reversed? The structural changes cannot be reversed, but symptoms can be effectively managed.
  • Will I need surgery? Most patients find relief with nonsurgical, interventional treatments.
  • Is exercise safe? Yes—low-impact exercises and physical therapy help maintain flexibility and strength.
  • Is it covered by insurance? Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover diagnostic and therapeutic spine treatments when medically necessary.
