Lumbar Radiculopathy (Sciatica)
Lumbar Radiculopathy, commonly known as Sciatica, occurs when a nerve in the lower spine becomes irritated or compressed, causing pain that radiates from the lower back down into the buttock, leg, or foot. This pain can range from mild to severe and may be accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness. At Pain Consultants of East Tennessee, we specialize in diagnosing the exact source of nerve irritation and providing advanced, minimally invasive treatments that relieve pain and restore function.
Quick facts
- Region affected: Lower back, buttocks, legs, or feet
- Common causes: Herniated disc, spinal stenosis, bone spurs, or degenerative disc disease
- Symptoms: Sharp or burning leg pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness
- Treatment goal: Reduce nerve inflammation, relieve pain, and improve mobility
Who it affects
- Adults with chronic or acute leg pain radiating from the lower back
- Individuals with jobs or activities involving heavy lifting or prolonged sitting
- Patients with degenerative disc disease or herniated discs
- Those whose symptoms worsen when sitting, bending, or coughing
How it develops
The lumbar spine contains nerve roots that branch out to the lower body. When these nerves are compressed or inflamed—often by a herniated disc, spinal narrowing (stenosis), or bone spur—pain signals travel along the nerve’s path, resulting in discomfort that radiates down one or both legs.
What to expect from treatment
Your provider will perform a thorough evaluation, including physical examination and imaging, to identify which nerve roots are affected. Treatment typically includes:
- Epidural Steroid Injections: Reduce inflammation and relieve pressure around the affected nerve.
- Selective Nerve Root Blocks: Diagnose and treat specific irritated nerves causing leg pain.
- Radiofrequency Neurotomy: Deactivates pain-transmitting nerves for long-term relief in some cases.
- Physical Therapy: Strengthens supporting muscles and improves posture and mobility.
- Medication Management: Controls inflammation and nerve-related pain.

FAQs
- Is sciatica the same as lumbar radiculopathy? Yes—sciatica is the common term for pain caused by irritation of lumbar nerve roots.
- Will it go away on its own? Mild cases may improve with rest or therapy, but persistent symptoms require interventional care.
- When should I seek treatment? If pain lasts longer than two weeks, worsens, or is accompanied by weakness, evaluation is recommended.
- Can injections help? Yes—epidural or selective nerve root injections often provide significant pain relief.
- Is surgery always necessary? No—many patients achieve lasting relief with nonsurgical treatments.
