BOTOX® Injections for Pain
BOTOX® injections can help reduce chronic pain by relaxing muscles and interrupting nerve signals that cause discomfort. At Pain Consultants of East Tennessee, these image-guided treatments are customized to target specific muscles contributing to your pain—helping you move more comfortably and live with less pain.
Quick Facts
- Setting: Outpatient
- Time: ~10–20 minutes
- Anesthesia: None or topical numbing
- Recovery: Immediate return to normal activity
- Duration of relief: Typically 3–4 months
Who It Helps
- Chronic migraine or headache
- Cervical dystonia (neck muscle spasms)
- Myofascial pain syndrome
- Muscle spasticity following stroke, spinal cord injury, or multiple sclerosis
- Persistent muscle tension not relieved by other treatments
How It Works
BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxinA) temporarily blocks nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. When injected precisely into affected areas, it decreases excessive muscle activity and nerve-driven pain. By relaxing tight muscles, it can relieve discomfort and help restore normal movement patterns.
What To Expect
- Before: Your provider will review your medical history and identify target muscles or pain regions.
- During: Tiny, image-guided injections are placed using a fine needle. Most sessions last less than 20 minutes and require no anesthesia.
- After: Normal activities can resume right away. Mild tenderness or bruising may occur at injection sites, but most patients notice relief within 1–2 weeks.
Benefits & Risks
- Benefits: Non-surgical, quick visits, minimal downtime, effective for several chronic pain types, may reduce medication use

After BOTOX® injections, your provider will review how your pain responds over the next several days to weeks.
If you experience meaningful relief, your provider may discuss whether repeat treatments could help maintain your results.
If you do not get the relief you were hoping for, that does not mean you are out of options. Your provider may reassess your symptoms, injection targets, or whether another source may be contributing to your pain.
Possible next steps may include:
- Adjusting your treatment plan
- Considering repeat treatment when appropriate
