Trigger Point Injections
Trigger Point Injections are a simple, effective treatment for painful muscle “knots” that fail to relax on their own. These tight bands of muscle fibers—called trigger points—can cause localized pain or radiate discomfort to other areas of the body. By injecting a small amount of anesthetic or anti-inflammatory medication directly into the trigger point, the muscle relaxes, tension eases, and pain relief often occurs within minutes. This quick, outpatient procedure can help restore movement and improve quality of life for patients with chronic muscle pain.
Quick Facts
- Setting: Outpatient, performed in-office
- Time: ~10–15 minutes

- Pain that worsens with movement or pressure on a specific area
How it works
A trigger point forms when muscle fibers remain contracted and irritated, restricting blood flow and causing pain. During a Trigger Point Injection, your provider identifies the affected area and injects a small amount of anesthetic—sometimes combined with a corticosteroid—directly into the trigger point. The injection helps break the pain-tension cycle by relaxing the muscle, improving circulation, and reducing inflammation.
What to expect
- Before: Your provider will locate the trigger points by gently pressing on muscles to identify tender areas. No major preparation is needed.
- During: A small needle is used to inject medication into the muscle knot. Several trigger points can be treated during one visit. You may feel a brief “twitch” as the muscle releases.
- After: Most patients experience immediate or near-immediate relief, followed by mild soreness for a day or two. Gentle stretching and hydration can enhance recovery and prolong results.
